Everyone has their own times and places for different teas. On rare occasions there are teas that are work great seemingly all the time—on humid summer afternoons over ice or rainy winter mornings served piping hot, after a meal or with snacks. Our Organic Loose Leaf Houjicha Roasted Green Tea is one of those hyper versatile teas.

Where many loose-leaf houjicha teas are made from twig tea—kukicha (茎茶or tea made from the stems of the tea plant)—or bancha (番茶or tea plucked later in the year), our Organic Loose Leaf Houjicha Roasted Green Tea is made from a blend of sencha (煎茶) leaves from spring and summer harvests. Essentially, it is sencha green tea that has been roasted into houjicha—all adhering to  the same strict organic standards that one of our preferred producers in Mie Prefecture (三重県) uses for all of their teas. The result is a more layered houjicha which, depending on how its brewed, can offer a sharper more vibrant taste, rather than the mellower experience of drinking most Japanese roasted green teas.

REPARATION:

Please enjoy our guide “How To Make Loose-Leaf Green Tea” which features simple instructions and a straightforward description for how to best prepare our Organic Loose Leaf Houjicha Roasted Green Tea.

The one key difference between Houjicha and most other high-grade Japanese green teas is that it responds better to hotter or fully boiled water (between 195 F/90 C to 210 F/100 C). Our guests have found that our Organic Loose Leaf Houjicha Roasted Green Tea can be brewed up to three times with 30 seconds, 1-minute, and 1-and-a-half minute steeps, all working well for each of the three infusions. As with all most of our teas, we do not recommend adding anything (sweetener or milk) to this tea.
